Recently, I have run into several instances where collecting, VHS collecting, specifically, has been referred to as hoarding. Whether the reference is done out of sarcasm or serious concern is beside the point, but I simply do not understand how this idea even makes sense.
I've spent serious time and effort collecting two things in life so far-- comic books and movies. These are my obsessions (comics, not so much nowadays) and as John Waters so aptly put it, "Life is nothing without obsession." [paraphrased]
I'm also a fierce completist, so when I get into something that strikes me a certain way, I want everything involved in that particular series. This makes living worthwhile.
Quick QUESTION: If you are getting actual enjoyment and use out of what you're going after, how exactly is it hoarding?
Short ANSWER: It isn't.

By the way, I could never get rid of anything I'm obsessed with unless I was down and out and was forced to in order to survive. Not that I have opinions either way on anyone who does as part of their personal process, they can do whatever they want, but I'm just sayin'. It's as if somebody somewhere is trying to make people feel guilty for doing what they love even though it's not hurting anyone. Although, I will go on record and say that if you or your family go hungry or miss paying a gas bill because you had to have that analog copy of some shitty Jess Franco movie and money was no object, you are an asshole with problems, and I doubt hoarding is at the top of that list.

THREE MEN AND A BOGEY (1989)

You take a future writer of Seinfeld, The Chris Rock Show, and Arli$$, some guy who was in Teen Wolf, and Dr. Katz, you put them together on a golf course and you get this. And I'm not even sure what this is or who it was intended for, but I was moved to grab it when I saw that "Additional material" was provided by Karl Lafonge, and Carl LaFong was a funny bit in W.C. Fields' It's a Gift.

Fair warning: Three Men and a Bogey does not conjure up W.C. Fields.

THE INVISIBLE MANIAC (1990)

There is no such thing as a guilty pleasure.
Though it's a persistent label that's often embraced without irony by the fans at whom it's promise of cheap thrills is squarely aimed, I think it's a really half-assed pathetic excuse for Entertainment Weekly, The View, and any local daily News at Noon program that features a "critic's corner" segment to talk about certain areas of so-called lowbrow entertainment without having to acknowledge they approve of it, or that they would (or could) enjoy such things under any other circumstances. In other words, anyone who categorically uses the term "guilty pleasure" is like someone saying, with a straight face, that they would never have fucked you if they weren't drunk.

I also have a big problem with the term Scream Queen. Yeah, the horror con kids love it, and it's a harmless title to carry, bestowed upon you by the very people who love you best, but the more familiar faces of the Reines du Cri club that gave reason for its existence to begin with are so much more than screaming, pretty faces, and are memorable for far more than just that. But then the card-carrying members who can only offer nothing but a shrill few minutes of bloody T&A in ill-fitting stripper shoes are remembered for nothing else, if at all, and they are usually referred to as B-movie Babes. I don't get it, Seduction Cinema. I don't get it at all.

The Invisible Maniac features my most favorite genre actress of the '80s and '90s, Debra Lamb. I was first made aware of her via Traci Lords' Advanced Jazzthetics workout tape. She's the brunette in the back with the amazing hair.
It's a cliché of a cliché, but I see something in her that I don't often see in hard working low budget film starlets who rarely get a chance to lead the way and who are often chosen because they don't have a problem with nudity.
Forget that she is painfully gorgeous.
Forget that her body is fucking Biblical in every way. In paying attention to her, no matter how small the role or how shitty the film, she's not only giving everything she's got to give to make it work, but also she has the actual ability to perform and to give a distinct life to whoever she's pretending to be. She embodies the part without looking back, she has fun with it, and never once have I seen her simply walk through anything.

"I was very excited when I got the call saying I had been cast as one of the five cheerleaders being tormented by the science teacher-turned-invisible maniac. I wasn't as excited when I found out that I got the role of "Betty", the class nerd. Fred Olen Ray films are almost always lovingly seasoned with Hollywood faces from a familiar past (or forgotten present), and he knows how to use the brilliance of character actors to maximum effect with minimum resources. Even The Killing's Marie Windsor (Queen of the B's herself) makes a cameo inside the famous Hollywood Book and Poster Company providing some of Fred Olen Ray's trademark self-parody.

Once again, the crowned prince of hodge-podge delivers a brain-freezing concoction of martial farts action and unsane English dubbing that will give you the coma you've been waiting for. No shit. The amount of pan & scan in this nightmare will have the heartiest pirates reaching for their Dramamine in no time.
This is the kind of movie you recommend to the person you gave your virginity to, but are now just friends with. The kind of movie you put on at a party to make everyone lose their buzz and go the fuck home. And I sat through it twice just to make this dumb blog post.

You know the bit, right?
There's this Chinese film with racketeers, gangs, suspicious transactions, misplaced money, a little bit of bad taste, and sloppy-ass kung fu. You take that film, and you insert extra fighting scenes that you shot in Whothefuckknows featuring Whothefuck Arethey and you record these fruit loops, who possess less fighting skill than a newborn baby, slapping at each other, rolling in the grass, pretending to die and foaming at the mouth, and you somehow make these scenes fit into the aforementioned Chinese film which has since been redubbed by schizophrenics on LSD, all the while hoping no one notices that box of chocolates you've given them is actually an envelope full of cat turds before you can get in your car and escape.

Look who was in charge of the English version. Red flags, everywhere.
I am amazed at this film's existence.

On the bright side, it has a Ron Swanson clone.

One of my childhood obsessions, I used to watch this each year it aired on television (CBS, I think), and each time the bird's "death song" made me cry, and the cobras scared the holy hell right out of me. Considering the viciousness of all the snakes in the garden, as well as death, danger, and the threat of being bitten in your sleep are all part of the atmosphere, it's odd to think about how the box recommends this be suitable for children 3 to 8 years of age compares/contrasts to how children today are being fed a largely empty calorie diet of tv shows and movies, that which isn't blatantly educational, but that is geared for them specifically.
Maybe things just appear different with so much distance between now and then.
In any event, I wouldn't hesitate to show this to any kid.

You won’t see her naked, but you will see her crying in lingerie with two black eyes after a night of estranged marital rape with Paul Snider (Bruce Weitz). Something else you won’t see is a single mention of Peter Bogdanovich, the final straw who broke the Snider’s back. Instead, they give us a poor facsimile in the shape of Robert “Mike Brady” Reed for this ho-hum cash-in on the tragic end of enchantment too soon.

Our favorite butterfly, Pia Zadora (who, in a conversation with John Waters, has jokingly threatened suicide over this film ever being shown again) is Jerilee, a passionate high school girl with dreams of becoming a serious author. After being sadistically sodomized with a garden hose by a Beverly Hills scumbag (Ray Liotta), she meets famous writer Walter Thorton, whom she idolizes, and very soon his interest in her talent rises to an interest in her sweet teen ass, climaxing in a trip to the altar. Jerilee’s writing skills begin to overshadow his, they bitterly separate, and she spends the rest of the film searching for an agent, an investor for her screenplay, and as much self respect she can carry while fucking her way straight to the top.
Battered urethras everywhere will blow chunks at the sight of Jerilee slowly grinding on top of her old man in an effort to teach him how to perform, whispering the word “Gently...” over and over again.
Blowjobs in the shower, adultery, abortion, predatory lesbians, catatonia, phallic symbolism, elevator love, and drug-induced paranoia with hallucinations make this filthfest the perfect date movie between your hand and your pants.

KICKBOXER FROM HELL (1992) - white guys version

From madman Godfrey Ho, and master of the no budget cut-and-paste hack job, Joseph Lai, comes this martial artless laughter-piece theater of pain and paranormal activity, suitable for framing...for the murder of your belief in logic and order!
They've taken a Chinese ghost film from the '70s and interpolated deliciously inane fighting sequences with a bunch of white guys in the early '90s, slap on a bit of of music from Halloween, stitch in a very flimsy connecting thread and give you a genre concoction of backyard swill worthy of blue ribbons and gold stars. I can't identify the Chinese footage except for the fact that it stars the gorgeous Nora Miao (Bruce Lee's first three films, most notably Way of the Dragon), but I think it could be 1975's THE OBSESSED. Anyone?

I've compiled all the '90s footage in four easy to view installments.
Oh, and if you think that the guy playing Lucifer is actually two different guys? Yeah, that was on purpose. Apparently. You will not believe how easy it is to destroy him. You just won't.

"Jason Blade...Every Woman's Dream...Every Criminal's Nightmare!"

Director Brian Trenchard-Smith and martial artist Edward John Stazak join forces again in this down under, high energy follow-up to the Aussie undercover actioner, Day of the Panther. It's odd that Celebrity Video distributed this under a different (video inserted) title, when they also carried Day of the Panther unaltered. Also, IMDB lists the date as 1989, but the date on the print is '87.

This is one of those off-kilter-yet-solid non-American genre films from the '80s that the MST3k crowd like to point at and laugh, but still are dying to show it to everyone they know. It's low budget, yeah, but Stazak obviously knows his way around a dojo well enough (kinda sloppy with nunchaku, though), and he performed practically all of his non-combat scene stunts, like fighting on a moving car and climbing the side of a fucking building with his bare hands; pretty impressive. I uncomfortably sat through Colombiana a couple of weekends ago, and I would've paid extra to have seen that movie deliver the kind of coherency and bona fide action set pieces and stunt work that a wad of genre "trash" like Fists of Blood has to offer. Loads of tongue-in-cheek business, a love interest subplot that isn't distracting, a Charles Xavier mentor type who can speak to our man Blade telepathically and can serve as the astral eyes in the back of his head during unfair fights, and ninjas who not only know the value in cool masks and unconventional weaponry (baseball bats, blow torches), but also in taunting their battered and breathless opponents with a little impromptu break dancing.
I mean, this is almost marriage material.
The finale plays out in a huge industrial factory, if the climax in The Game of Death was Donkey Kong's recurring nightmare where Mario never wears a shirt.

Is it cheesy? Yes. Have I seen better? For sure, but Trenchard-Smith proves again that he can cook just about anything, and he got my order of bloody fists just right.

Hollywood Cop!Where journeymen character actors Cameron Mitchell and Aldo Ray earn rent money for the month, while Troy Donahue does the best he can, and Jim Mitchum says "son of a bitch" a LOT as he rushes through dialog like he's got a plane to catch.

This movie is so inept it's almost infuriating. It's like the dream of a spoof in the mind of a mental patient with short term memory loss. If this movie were a person, it would be that uncle who always calls you by your brother's name and asks you how school is going even though you graduated 2 years ago. It would search the entire house for its car keys when they were in its pocket the whole time.

This is '80s exploitation at it's lowest. But, strangely enough, the box's cover art doesn't lie! You get exactly what it promises. Where it goes wrong, however, is when the pictures start to actually move-- pathetic martial arts, a police captain with an upset stomach, the worst black buddy-cop you could ever ask for, jump-cut car explosions, a boy who uses sweet talk to convince the Doberman Pinscher guarding him to be his friend and help him escape, etc. And when was the last time you saw a cop so renegade, so off his hinges that he kicks open a door that's already open?

Not really over the top enough to be jaw-droppingly "anything", the video tribute from Everything Is Terrible contains most of the best (aka tasteless) bits of this analog atrocity from Celebrity Video, which is a diamond mine full of cubic zirconia.

THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC (1979)

Do you have that tired haunted feeling? Are you seeing snakes, skeletons, maggots in the bean sprouts? Have you been fasting for five days, and yet it continues to rain?
Don’t look now, friend, but you’ve been bewitched!

The wedding between bastard playboy Kohar and the daughter of the Village Chief has been called on account of devil’s rain. When the local witch doctor determines that the uninvited evil spirit on site comes from the west, he is promptly raised in the air by unseen hands and repeatedly slammed into the ground until dead!
Things are getting serious, and folks are demanding answers. Conveniently, Kohar remembers a girl, Murni, who was once in love with him and who just happens to live west of the village. Could it be? Could it be she’s jealous that he's getting married to someone else, she’s using black magic to plague his betrothed and ruin their special day?! BINGO. No second opinion, no proofs of purchase required, it's her fault and she must be destroyed.
CSI: Indonesia.
Kohar takes the charge of an unruly gang of men hopped up on intravenous superstition and marches out to Murni’s home where
1) he slaps the shit out of her mom
2) their shanty is set on fire with mom inside
3) a kicking, screaming, crying Murni is thrown off a fucking cliff.
Trust no bitch.

After bouncing a couple of times in a very non-sexual way, Murni’s fall lands her in the arms of an old man (literally) who takes her back to his place where he nurses her back to health. Murni recounts her horrible ordeal, but insists she isn’t responsible for cursing anyone. Even though Kohar said he loved her, robbed her of her virginity in a rice field among the leering bison, telling her “It was bound to happen sooner or later, so what difference does it make where it happens? One place is as good as another when you’re in the right mood.” Even though he dropped her like a hot chakra to marry some one-woman brat pack with money, she had nothing to do with all this. She doesn’t even know black magic! The crafty old sorcerer convinces Murni that she’s been wronged to the point of justifiable revenge, and if she won’t do it for herself, then she should do it out of gratitude for him saving her life. Unable to refuse, Murni’s training in the black arts begins immediately-- nude mid-air flips off a trampoline in the moonlight, having boiling blood poured on her head, and getting her fringe trimmed.
Training complete, her revenge plays out in a graphic art gallery series of bizarre bodily harm featuring a deadly bee swarm, gory flesh explosions, turning water into quicksand, babynapping, good ol’ fashioned tree-hanging, and forcing Kohar to rip his own head from his body with his bare hands so that it can fly through the air and bite people on the neck! Money shot.
Best part is, things only get even more fucked up from there.

Starring the lovely Suzzanna, this Rapi Films release is fast-paced, no-bullshit fun and doesn’t hold back when it comes to gruesome spectacle and effective moments of eyeball rape, making it a perfect double feature “opening act” to something like THE BOXER’S OMEN, THE WITCH WITH FLYING HEAD, MYSTICS IN BALI, or THE SEVENTH CURSE. The short scene in which Murni tries to breastfeed the baby she stole and ends up enjoying it a little bit more than a wannabe mommy should was especially inspired.

I recently received an email from Jack Marino, producer of 1985's KILLZONE (scandyfactory.com/kill-zone), which was directed by David Prior and co-starred his brother Ted Prior, who later took the testosterone-pumped lead in the must-see Prior classic, DEADLY PREY (scandyfactory.com/deadly-prey).
Mr. Marino has a mission, and that is to get KILLZONE on DVD and into the hands of those who love outrageous, independent 1980's camo-clad action. People just like YOU!
Cutting to the chase, I'll let Mr. Marino do the talking:

I can put in all the behind the scenes stuff and there is footage out there of the making of which I will have to find.

It has arrived. I don't know how many other blogs have posted their thoughts yet, so I apologize if this comes across as old news, but I've been patiently waiting for this since Autumn of 2008.
And I think it's...just pretty okay.
The book itself is a plain-ish rectangle, which could perfectly frame an actual VHS tape were the tape to be centered on the paperback cover, housed in a decorative slipcase. 200 pages total, 190 pages of VHS art. The author, Jacques Boyreau, pens an intro.

WHAT I LIKE:
► NO TEXT. Each page is a splash page with two leaves devoted to each title; the left is a back cover image, and the right is a shot of the box standing upright.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:
► The right page "photos" aren't (and I'll bet almost anything on this) real photos.
The image is the supposed box in 3/4 view showing the front and the left-hand side, but it looks unashamedly manipulated, almost as if a template or two were created for cover art and spine info with realistic albeit phony inventory stickers slapped on here and there. A few boxes even give the game away by squeezing too much text/images into the small space reserved for the side of the box, appearing overly distorted as a result. I dunno. Just doesn't feel right.
I would've enjoyed seeing a full page front cover scan instead, to be honest.
However, I did get a thrill out of seeing different versions of some of the featured titles of which I own a copy (e.g. ORCA). Mine is on the left.

Ultimately, it's a decent work-print of a tribute, all things considered, for domestic VHS releases, even if I am left perplexed by a handful of their choices which made final cut for this relatively small team of only 95 horror-focused titles (SCHWARZKOPF: HOW THE WAR WAS WON; GARY COLEMAN: FOR SAFETY'S SAKE; THE ANIMATED ADVENTURES OF DICK TRACY; BOWHUNTING WHITETAILS: JUST FOR FUN ???).
Also, not enough action titles for my tastes.

Full of flavor for the layman, it's barely a taste for the devoted. But really, does the layman even care about this shit?
